MARJORIE RYERSON
Marjorie Ryerson is a writer, photographer, editor, teacher and journalist. Her books include both art books and non-fiction books, such as the acclaimed art book Water Music, and the 2005 non-fiction book Companions for the Passage; Stories of the Intimate Privilege of Accompanying the Dying.
The publication of Water Music led to a non-profit organization (www.water-music.org) that Marjorie runs. The organization raises awareness about water–through performances, lectures, concerts, art shows and educational programs in schools–and also raises revenue to help provide safe drinking water for families around the world.
Marjorie was chosen as the 2005 recipient of the international Harry E. Schlenz Medal for public education about water quality, because of Water Music and the larger Water Music non-profit. She also was the recipient of the 2003 Paul Keough Award for leadership in the water environment.
Marjorie lives with Angus, photo below, and two ancient, shedding cats (both 17). She is outside any chance she gets -often on water in her kayak, snowshoeing the back 40, or hiking up some of her favorite Vermont mountains. For some perverse reason, she also gets real pleasure out of battling the endless crab grass and tomato blight in her veggie garden, or hauling wood into the house (and ashes out) of her woodstoves.
Marjorie currently has two new books underway–one, another narrative non-fiction book, and the other, a book of her poetry .
