Chris and the Remainder Den

The Remainder Den
Like most businesses, the book industry has its own peculiar vernacular. Free advance readers' copies of books are called galleys or ARCS; a low retailer's discount from a publisher is known as a short discount; and distributors are stribs (at least at Bear Pond). But my favorite word in the bookseller's language is remainders.

Remainders are books that are left over after the publisher has stopped printing a particular edition. Often the publisher has a number of hardcovers left when the book goes to paperback; other times they may decide to produce an essentially identical book with a different binding. Whatever the reason, the result is that we are periodically able to buy large quantities of these excellent books in bulk, then offer them at anywhere from 50% to over 75% off the original retail price. These are the books that you see out on the tables in front of the store and upstairs in the Remainder Den. We've been steadily increasing the numbers of remainders we are stocking, and the titles are constantly changing.

Remainders can only be purchased at the store.  Come visit us and browse our tables or relax in the Remainder Den located at the top of the stairs.
A slew of new bargain books have started coming in and there's some real gems. Check out our sidewalk tables and the Remainder Den upstairs to see all the great new arrivals.
