Set initially in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia beginning in the mid 20th century
Verghese's story takes the reader from Ethiopia to Nairobi to Queens,
New York and back again. We follow character Marion Stone as he traces
his life and his conjoined and separated twin, Shiva (they are also
known as 'ShivaMarion') from birth to adulthood.
In his first novel, Verghese's writing is stunning. Based on his
vocation as professor at Stanford School of Medicine, Verghese creates
detailed and fascinating medical and surgical scenes. His ability to
write from the female point of view in the character of Hema is superb.
In this epic story Verghese captures the essence of family, sense of
place, unrequited love, and the history and culture of Ethiopia. It's
also an excellent book club discussion choice!

A customer brought From Here to There to the front counter the other day flipping through it saying, “ah, they chose my map.” Gowri Savoor showed me a map on pages 156-157 which is entitled “The Future is Unwritten.” I became very curious and scrutinized the book. It’s a compendium of hand drawn maps selected from the Hand Drawn Map Association. Kris Harzinski writes in the preface, “HDMA began as a website www.handmaps.org where I posted the few maps I had collected with a simple invitation to others asking them to contribute their own maps, their stories and their personal accounts…”
The maps are much more than directions. The cartographers included in this collection instill imagination, personal histories as well as a sense of place in order for the map reader to understand their perspective. The maps fall under a variety of themes such as: Direction, Fictional and Artful Maps. A few historical maps are included, too. The maps’ detail ranges from a few lines and landmarks, see pages 126-127 “Meta Mapa” which are brief hand drawn maps on hands to Montpelierite Gowri Savoor’s beautifully intricate self-portrait which she describes “…faces contain elements that chart our individual existence.”
One negative criticism is the Table of Contents is not accurate. This, however, only compels me to consider the maps and themes more closely and prolong my enjoyment of the novelty of this collection.

Valerie Martin’s newest novel is a thriller set in the 70′s in New York City. It’s based on a group of actors’ lives on off-off Broadway while they strive for fame. She weaves a conflict surrounding Edward Day whose life has been saved by fellow actor, Guy Margate. The dilemma for Edward is how much does he owe Guy for saving his life? Martin deftly develops Edward’s narcissistic and insecure character. Her description of the struggle between the two while they vie for character, Madeleine Delavergne’s love and their competing acting careers is superb. Martin’s research involving the theatrical world reveals fluid and precise language. It’s a page turner!
