Staff Reviews

This prequel to The English Patient is set in Toronto between World War I and World War II. The characters are from different cultures and classes, but have in common the experience of constructing mysterious backgrounds and veils. Ultimately they share fantastic encounters and adventures, both tragic and sublime.

In the course of his adventures, Patrick's life intersects with those of characters who reappear in Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning The English Patient. 256 pp.
