About the Book
"How often do we hear the story of the urban Native American experience? Tales of Native Americans off the reservation are not common in literature today. Luckily, Tommy Orange has stepped into the void with this powerful new story about a wide cast of characters in the Oakland area from a variety of places and for a variety of reasons. A memorable collection of Native Americans live their stories of disaffection, yearning, and pride as the characters move toward the shared experience of the Big Oakland Powwow, each with their own motivations. Orange's writing is deep, poetic, and brutally honest; I was instantly drawn into the world of this unfamiliar subculture and its personalities and narratives." — Claire
